OMBRES PLAÇA COMERCIAL

The project proposes a new seasonal shading structure for Plaça Comercial, in front of the historic Mercat del Born in Barcelona. Developed as part of the city's Pla Clima strategy, the intervention responds to the need to adapt public spaces to rising temperatures, improving thermal comfort while preserving their role as places for social interaction and urban life.

The proposal takes its inspiration from the architecture of the Mercat del Born, particularly the geometric patterns formed by the brickwork of its façade. These distinctive diamond-shaped motifs are reinterpreted through a lightweight composition of textile membranes, establishing a visual dialogue between the historic building and the contemporary intervention. The structure follows the modulation of the market, extending its architectural rhythm into the square.

Conceived as a modular and removable system, the structure combines microperforated textile membranes with a slender steel framework. The arrangement of the canopies generates a sequence of shaded spaces while maintaining the openness and visual continuity of the square. Concrete bases, designed to function as urban seating, support the structure without requiring underground foundations, respecting the existing paving and the infrastructure beneath the public space.

Beyond its environmental function, the project seeks to reinforce the identity of Plaça Comercial through an intervention that connects architectural heritage, climate adaptation and everyday public life. Shade becomes a new urban element, transforming the experience of the square while encouraging gathering, resting and social activity during the warmer months.
